Over half of home movers relocate upto 10 miles from their current residence according to research into 28,000 home moves.
Data collated by home moving comparison site Compare My Move shows 27% of movers stay within two miles of their current residence; a further 12% remain within two to five miles; and 15% remain within 10-30 miles.

The research shows, says Compare my Move, people want to stay close to loved ones, friends, and familiarity. When looking at individual regions people in London move just 33 miles when relocating, making it the shortest moving distance of any region. In contrast, Scots move an average of 57 miles. Those in the South average 49 miles, while those in the Midlands (37 miles) and North (39 miles) average much shorter distances.

Being close to family and friend, less stress, and minimising disruption count among the reasons for people remaining close to home, say Compare My Move. Commenting on the research founder, Dave Sayce said
“It’s difficult to move somewhere far away from the connections you have already established, and making new friends in adult life is also something that is tricky to do. I think that’s why moving around an hour away is the average for Brits, it has the perks of moving somewhere new without being too far from where you call home.”
