Lessons in Life and Business with On Point Data

With over 35 years of combined industry experience, On Point Data co-founders Jeremy Dorkins and Kevin Johnson have accrued many pearls of wisdom. In the spirit of the season of giving, Jeremy and Kevin wanted to share some of the key insights that have brought them to where they are today.

Kevin writes:

“I once said to someone that I felt “very lucky” to be where I was in life. They reflected back to me that much of the luck we feel is due to the efforts we put in; we make much of our own luck. She said that my feelings directly resulted from who I am, what I do and how I behave. I thought she was being very generous, but it stuck with me.

Sometime later, I heard the phrase, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” It summed up well the previous conversation, and this time, it was my turn for reflection. There’s no question that we reap what we sow. Effort, commitment, adherence to a strong set of values, working to a plan, and kindness to others (treating them as we like to be treated) will, inevitably, lead to good outcomes. And yes, some luck will be involved, but most of it is about our return on invested time and effort.”

Another defining principle for Kevin Johnson is Newton’s Third Law of Action & Reaction, which states that there is an equal and opposite reaction for every action (force) in nature. Kevin expanded on this further, ‘I’ve done a lot of sailing, and I know this to be true – when pulling on one end of a rope (a “sheet”, in sailing terminology), something is always happening at the other end. You have to be just as aware of what the accompanying “reaction” might be as you are of the “action” that you are taking.

The same is true in business; for every decision made, action taken, word spoken, and email written, there is a reaction, and we need to be very aware of this as we pass through our professional lives. Making the wrong decision or taking an improper action can have consequences, just as misplaced words and emails will have consequences. I am constantly, in business, reminding myself to think of what is happening at the other end of the rope.’

On what drives him, especially regarding forming On Point Data, Jeremy Dorkins writes:

“It essentially comes down to the thrill of witnessing a business evolve and the satisfaction of knowing you are contributing to society. Although the journey is challenging and may not be suitable for everyone, the rewards are significant for those who thrive on the freedom to make decisions, shape workplace culture, and provide exceptional service to clients!”

He went on:

“There is a unique joy in creating something from the ground up—a business born of your vision and nurtured by your dedication. While climbing the corporate ladder may bring a sense of achievement, it rarely compares to the satisfaction of witnessing the fruits of your labour blossom into a thriving business. As a business owner and leader, you have the privilege of cultivating a work environment that inspires, motivates, and aligns with your vision. The journey, marked by both triumphs and tribulations, becomes a testament to your resilience and tenacity.”
