I was photocopying some old pre-registration deeds earlier this week in order to prepare a contract for the sale of unregistered land. As I tried to make the large documents fit onto the copier, I reflected on the way in which documents were drafted; the number of words equating the fees which could be charged (which is why we have so many hereinafter and hereinbefore type words), but also about the formality of such documents.
I remember being sent to the local Stamping office to have a PD stamp attached to a Conveyance. I knew instinctively what PD meant but would many younger conveyancers know?
I also then started to think about the acronyms we now use on a daily basis. Sometimes, an estate agent will email and ask if I have sent the DCP and this could be easily confused with DPC. There are so many which were not used years ago and I think that this is a result of the proliferation of emails and the need to ask questions more quickly .
