Petition calling on Labour to scrap Stamp Duty launched by Conservative party

The Conservative party have launched a petition calling on Labour to abolish Stamp Duty Land Tax.

The policy was a surprise inclusion in party leader Kemi Badenoch’s speech at the party conference in October 2025 and is now a major policy objective outlined in their policy renewal programme. At the time Badenoch said the housing market is not working the way it should, with stamp duty ‘the big barrier that keeps getting in the way’.

Scrapping stamp duty will benefit people of all ages because Conservativism must speak to all generations. The young professional, buying their first flat. The couple looking for somewhere to bring up their first baby.  The growing family hunting for their forever home. The pensioner who wants somewhere a little smaller, or maybe to move nearer the grandchildren. No longer will they be punished with a tax that is a barrier to doing the right thing for them, for their family, and for society.”

The petition, which appears on the Conservative party website, calls for the Labour government to scrap stamp duty on primary residences:

“I sign this campaign demanding Labour scrap stamp duty. This petition will be presented to the Labour Party before the Autumn recess 2026.”

The petition also asks how the respondent voted in the last election, and what the likelihood was of voting for any of the major parties at any upcoming local elections.
