NHBC launch new Standards for UK House Builders

The National House-Building Council (NHBC) has announced a number of technical standards set to be launched in 2020.

From 1st January 2020, every home covered by an NHBC warranty will need to ensure that they comply with the new quality standards.

The NHBC hope that changes will reduce construction defects, improve consumer satisfaction and decrease the amount of remedial work needed to ensure basic standards are met.

Chapter 9.1, which focuses on consistent approaches to finishes, has been amended to ensure further guidance and tolerances are offered to house builders.

Increased safety standards have also been applied to the construction of staircases by amending policies concerning handrails and fixing.

A downloadable set of standards and supplementary technical guidance has been made available to developers.

Paul Cribbens, NHBC’s Standards and Technical Manager, said

“We continue to live through a challenging time within the house building sector, where the need to increase housing output is tempered by the on-going skills shortage.

“However, our focus remains firmly on improving quality for those people living in brand new homes across the UK, reducing construction defects, improving homeowner satisfaction and avoiding the need for costly and invasive remedial work, something which is in all our interests.”

Will these standards improve the quality of house building?
