A new podcast from two well-known conveyancing professionals aims to shed a light on the daily trials, tribulations and enjoyment of running two separate property departments.
“Bricks and Banter” has been launched by Tom Parkinson and Laura Cartwright and is described as taking a light-hearted look at the challenges they face as Directors of their law firms and Department Heads, the issues facing conveyancers at the coal face and the property market as a whole.
Tom Parkinson is a Director and Head of the Property Department at Cheshire-based Rowlinsons Solicitors and Laura Cartwright is a Partner and Head of the Residential Property Team at Bell Lamb & Joynson – their offices are just a 5-minute drive apart – and both firms have been recognised nationally for their commitment to excellence with various awards success at both the British Conveyancing Awards and Modern Law Awards.
In the first episodes Tom and Laura discussed their hopes for their own businesses and predictions for the property market; as well as sharing details of their own efforts to improve their respective firms.
Alongside the hosts, Brick and Banter will invite guests to talk about their experiences in the conveyancing and property profession, and will welcome property sector trainer Clare Yates on the latest podcast to discuss her work and the importance of recognising how everyone plays their part in client care and customer success, drilling down on where the respect for the profession has gone and the relationship between Solicitors and Estate Agents.
Says Tom Parkinson;
“The idea behind the podcast was not to provide the usual technical updates on property law, or discuss the merits and implementation of various initiatives in the market currently; but rather to take a light-hearted look at the day-to-day life of running a law firm and conveyancing practice and try to inject some humour in what can be at times a difficult role.
We all work extremely hard and we thought that it would be good to give something different back to the profession in a way that wasn’t too serious and hopefully made people smile. From the great feedback we have received so far, we are doing well!
Most memorably, our third episode was recorded after one particularly late evening in Soho which yielded some interesting thoughts on how we can better monitor our service levels and client care.”
Laura Cartwright adds;
“Conveyancing is a busy and challenging profession. It certainly has its ups and downs but let’s not forget what we do. Looking after clients during one of the most stressful times of their lives can be very demanding but also rewarding when you have worked with them on this journey and they move into their dream home.
“Tom and I have known each other for a few years and although on paper we are competitors, we have always offered mutual support but certainly share lots of playful banter! We really don’t take ourselves too seriously which is where the idea for the podcast came from.”
“We set ourselves a challenge and have really stepped outside of our comfort zones and although we have struggled on occasions and have realised its far more difficult to do a podcast than we thought, we have already completed what we set out to do and learned lots of new things along the way. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support we have received from our colleagues and friends who we have met at various conferences and events – it just goes to show that networking really does work”.
