Groundwater Flooding – The Hidden Peril, Dr Maxine Zaidman, JBA Risk Management

A look at the frequently underestimated risk of groundwater flooding; what it is, the mechanism as to why it occurs and why so many properties were flooded as a result of this often hidden flood peril during the winter of 2013/14 when groundwater levels reached record highs. As many home insurance policies have exclusions for groundwater flooding, what should a property lawyer or conveyancer look for in environmental/flood searches? Dr Maxine Zaidman will also introduce the various different types of flooding and discuss the basics of flood modelling using height maps for surface water, groundwater, river and sea, etc.

The Real Link Between Flooding and Ground Stability, Dr Clive Edmonds, Peter Brett Associates

It is important for property conveyancers and solicitors to better understand the hazards presented by ‘sinkholes’ so that perceived problems can be put into context for clients when buying and selling their properties. Record breaking wet periods, particularly in the form of intensive bursts of rain have resulted in unusually large volumes of water percolating into the ground and setting off a record number of ‘sinkhole’ events. Dr Clive Edmonds will discuss the widespread damage such collapses can create, and will delve into their trigger mechanisms and the very important link to movement of water through the ground during and following flood climatic periods. Recent significant sinkhole events, preventative measures, and the cautious use of sustainable drainage systems will also be discussed.

Are We Really Flood Re Ready? Harriet Boughton, Flood Re

Flood Re launched in the UK on 4th April 2016, providing affordable insurance for as many as 350,000 domestic households in a flood risk area. Harriet Boughton, General Counsel for Flood Re discusses what legal professionals working within the property space need to know, including how the Flood Re scheme works in practice, how it can provide peace of mind for homeowners when purchasing, mortgaging or insuring their property and what’s next after Flood Re?
