Marketing for conveyancers

April Land Registry figures show which firms made the most applications – 31st May 2010

Data obtained by Today’s Conveyancer shows that 226,000 applications were made to Land Registry in April by account holders.  This figure included commercial work, social housing and applications such as name changes by lenders.

Some of the biggest applicants were banks and commercial businesses with Trowers and Hamlins heading the list.

Interestingly 14% of applications were made by firms that made only one application to Land Registry and an additional 42% by firms making up between 2 and 10 applications.  Therefore 56% of applications were made by account holding firms that made less than 10 applications to Land Registry.  Looking at the list the majority of these firms are small solicitors practices.

Only 9% of firms made more than 50 applications in April.

Despite all the concerns about consolidation in the sector it seems that the majority of conveyancing is still done by smaller firms.

In the top 100 the large remortgage firms stand out but so too do some noticeable large transactional firms such as My Home Move.  Firms known for their links with brokers such as Goldsmith Williams also seem to be doing well despite the challenges of that sector.

Over the coming months Today’s Conveyancer will be tracking the number of applications of various firms to see whether larger firms are taking a greater market share as predicted by consolidation.
