Work – Life balance needs to be our Mission

As we acknowledge World Mental Health Day on October 10th the importance of good mental health and wellbeing comes into the spotlight once again. It is truly inspiring to see so many business leaders taking action to create positive working environments, where the infrastructure of the organisation supports a genuinely caring culture, with wellbeing and good mental heath a mission statement.

As leaders, whether in business or in our personal lives, we have a perpetual responsibility to care for the wellbeing of our colleagues and the communities that we serve. Kindness, listening, and providing practical support are the foundations of our endeavours.

The very cornerstone of effective leadership is kindness. It is crucial for leaders to not only provide the infrastructure to facilitate active listening but also for the organisation and the individuals within it to respond appropriately to the concerns raised by their team members. Creating an environment where staff feel safe to express themselves is the first step toward building a supportive workplace.

It is essential for organisations to establish the right infrastructure to identify mental health and wellbeing concerns. Perhaps a dedicated HR department, trained mental health first aiders or identifying individuals within the business who can provide initial support, ensures a point of contact in times of need.

Initiative-taking organisations will have a network of professional wellbeing experts to call upon and policies in place detailing how to react to difficult wellbeing situations. Affordable wellbeing services, both online and in-person, are readily available and will help to ensure good mental health and continued wellbeing.

Truly great organisations understand that their staff want and need far more from life than a good salary. Work – life balance is a mission for these organisations. Hybrid & flexible working – manageable workloads – extended holiday entitlement – consistent recognition & reward – mentoring, coaching and personal development. It is these organisations put wellbeing and mental health before profits.

Keep looking out for each other and please keep up the great work in being kind, listening and taking action.
