Winner Spotlight: Tracey Fenner

Winner Spotlight: Tracey Fenner

On Tuesday 25th May 2021, professionals from across the conveyancing sector came together to celebrate the successes and achievements of the industry at The British Conveyancing Awards 2021.

The inaugural awards took to the virtual stage, and were led by the fabulous award winning broadcaster and journalist Samira Ahmed. If you want a re-cap of the action, the recording is available to view here.

As part of our winner spotlight features, we want to shine a light on those who have been crowned in first place at this year’s event.

Today we profile Tracey Fenner, Crane & Staples who won the ‘Risen to the Challenge’ Legal Secretary of the Year award.

About the award

Legal secretaries often sit behind the scenes and do not get the recognition they deserve for the crucial support they give to colleagues and customers. We want to shine a light by finding the champions who smooth the inner workings of a conveyancing practice making the home moving process happen for so many clients.

Over the last 12 months, the individual who wins this award must have demonstrated:

  • Exceptional client service a “can-do” attitude and high levels of communication
  • How they relive the burden of pressure from colleagues
  • Initiative in challenging situations
  • Self-development and a commitment to continuous improvement

The judges commended Tracey saying:

“It is the warmth of the testimonials that sets Tracey apart.”

Madeleine Ingall from Parity Legal Limited was highly commended in this category and Amy Briscoe from Dutton Gregory Solicitors secured third place.

How did you feel winning the New Business Champion of the Year and ‘Risen to the Challenge’ Legal Secretary award?

I felt delighted to have been recognised.  I have worked within the law for more years than I care to remember and have never received anything like this before.

Tell us about your team and the services you provide

I support four solicitors and one conveyancer at Crane & Staples in Welwyn Garden City. We are a close-knit, friendly team who specialise in all aspects of property law. This includes sales, purchases, re-mortgages and transfers of equity.

How has your firm developed in the last 14 months and navigated the added complexity of the coronavirus pandemic and SDLT holiday?

We are all now capable of working remotely and flexi-time has now become the new normal.  Prior to the pandemic, all staff were office -based but now we work from home a few days a week. Changes have also been made regarding cybercrime and we are all more up to speed on this, which has been highlighted over the last 14 months.  We have also invested in sophisticated technology so we can continue to provide a quality service without a reliance on slower paper methods of correspondence.

What’s next on the cards for you?

To continue as I have been and give 100% every day!

What advice would you give someone thinking of joining the conveyancing sector?

It’s hard work, you have to be patient and good with people.  The job has become very challenging but ultimately rewarding, especially when you help someone move in to their dream home.

This is the very first British Conveyancing Awards, which recognises the herculean efforts of the industry, why do you think these awards are so important, especially after the last 14 months?

These Awards are important to let people know what we do is appreciated and to give people recognition when it is due, especially after this difficult year.

Everyone at Today’s Conveyancer congratulates all those who entered this year’s awards.
