‘The void between supply and demand is still widening by the day’

Andy Sommerville, Director at Search Acumen, comments on MHCLG Housebuilding Statistics Q4 2017:

“We’re yet to break ground on the UK’s housing crisis. Britain is building more homes, but when the scale of the UK’s housing crisis is considered, this uplift is just a drop in the ocean. The void between supply and demand is still widening by the day, continuing to push house prices to the ceiling limit of what first-time-buyers can afford.

“We have forecasted a housing shortfall of almost a million homes by 2022 if the government doesn’t take more action. In the coming months, we hope to see the foundations of change being laid, brought about by the government’s recent pledges and policies to get Britain building. But, if we are to fix this housing crisis sustainably and for the long term, we must do so intelligently, looking to the tools of technology and data to help us identify not only where we can build, but where we need to build.

“The UK needs to embark on the biggest construction drive it has seen in a century. To do so successfully, government, industry and technology must work together.”
