Victorian homes reign as most sought-after period property style

New data shows that Victorian architecture commands significant appeal in the UK property market as historical homes top the nation’s search history.

The wealth of period properties across Britain boasts house designs from Georgian, post WWII and Victorian Britain – but it’s the allure of the gilded age that has homebuyers captivated. Data from property website Rightmove has unveiled key search terms from the site’s Keyword Sort Tool – with an increased popularity of historic and unique properties. Words such as ‘character’ and ‘period’ rank among the top twenty most searched for keywords in house criteria this year.

Rightmove’s Property Expert Tim Bannister said: “Home hunters continue to be captivated by the character and charm of properties that we see in period dramas. Victorian homes remain particularly popular, characterised by their historic charm, solid construction, and spacious interiors. You’ll often find Victorian houses in some of the most desirable locations which include convenient access to schools and transport links.”

Rightmove claims that the successes of TV period dramas such as Bridgeton, Downton Abbey and The Tudors have spurned property owners on to replicate the charm of bygone eras – seeking spacious interiors, ornate facades and intricate detailing.

Georgian properties are the second most searched-for style, while the third most popular home style is Edwardian, followed by Tudor in forth, and Regency homes in fifth.

Matt Thompson, Head of Sales at Chestertons, said: “London’s property market boasts a great number of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses with each architectural style having its own fanbase. It is worth noting that, post-pandemic, we did see a slight spike in interest for Georgian properties as buyers were driven to find a house style that has a reputation for being more spacious and could accommodate a home office more easily. Still, as demand for properties in the capital outstrips supply, all architectural styles continue to attract buyer interest and offers.”

KFH Sales Director of Rightmove for North and Central London says that demand for Victorian homes is ‘high’ and the ‘charm’ of period properties ‘never seems to go out of fashion’.
