A Conservative think tank has suggested those who install heat pumps which help reduce energy consumption, should have their stamp duty halved.
The think tank has claimed the rebate would encourage people to make their homes more energy-efficient when they move.
Heat pumps are more efficient than gas boilers as they can produce more than three times the energy they use. By transferring heat from outside air to water it heats rooms via radiators, and also can be used for hot water.
Similar rebates have proved effective in Finland leading to record heat pump sales in the country.
This is in addition to previous proposals, such as the cycle to work scheme as well as subsidies for electrical cars.
The think tank by Onward, led by Ed Birkett, has suggested these proposals as part of a report put forward by the government to help make the UK reach Net Zero emissions by 2050. The report stated:
“Conventional policy has displayed limited effectiveness in driving these changes to date, and time is running out. It is clear that the government cannot simply ban, regulate or subsidise its way to net zero. Instead, the government needs to learn from previous policy failures and think creatively about new forms of intervention which can encourage people to make the required changes.”
