Start of the year sees sales received for registration rise

Price paid data from HM Land Registry sets out the details of residential and commercial land and property sales in England and Wales.

During January 2018, 116,795 sales were received for registration, representing a month on month rise of 40,468.

Of those that received registration, 85,753 were freehold, up by 23.5% on January last year. New builds saw a more modest increase, up by 15% for the same month to 16,685.

The types of property that made up the sales received for registration were as follows:

  • 25, 932 were detached
  • 29,282 were semi-detached
  • 30,742 were terraced
  • 22,887 were flats or maisonettes
  • 7,953 were classed as other

In January 2018, the most expensive residential sale took place in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where a property sold for £37,720,000. The cheapest, however, occurred in Lancashire, where a terraced property sold for £15,000.

Commercially speaking, the most expensive sale during the first month of 2018 took place in Greater Manchester, where a property sold for £103,033,044. The cheapest commercial sale for the month occurred in Kensington and Chelsea, where a property sold for £100.
