SRA warning: May, May & Merrimans

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has issued a warning involving con artists claiming to be from May, May & Merrimans.

This is the second warning this week relating to a con artists pretending to represent a genuine firm regulated by the SRA.

The SRA has been informed that a number of individuals across the country have been sent fake letters purportedly from May, May & Merrimans, alleging that they are acting for someone who died in the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004.

They claim that that there is a deposit of money in an English insurance company against which the recipient can claim.

The reported fake letters are signed by a Roddy Steen, but other letters connected with this fraud may not always use this individual’s name.

Any business or transactions through the e-mail addresses of esq.roddysteen@gmail.com or via the telephone number 0044-7448 034981 are not undertaken by a solicitor’s practice or by an individual authorised or regulated by the SRA.

May, May & Merrimans are a genuine firm of solicitors authorised and regulated by the SRA and Roddy Steen is a solicitor within the firm. The firm have posted their own warning about hoax communications and for further information please see their website.

Any information about or dealings with individuals via the e-mail address esq.roddysteen@gmail.com or telephone number 0044-7448 034981, particularly if it involves the payment of money, should be reported to the police.

Affected members of the public can also report the matter to the SRA via fraud@sra.org.uk. Solicitors should report the matter to the SRA red alert line on 0845 850 0999 or redalert@sra.org.uk.
