SRA launches training consultation

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has launched a twelve-week consultation on proposed changes to its education and training regulations. The closing date for responses is 25 February 2014.

This consultation follows the publication of “Training for Tomorrow” in October, this set out the SRA’s response to its Legal Education and Training review.

The proposals are a part of the SRA’s Red Tape Initiative and aim to remove any unnecessary bureaucratic processes.

The consultation comprises seven proposals, including the removal of complex exemption arrangements and of the duplication of regulatory requirements placed on higher education institutions by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and the replacement of student enrolment with a targeted approach to dealing with character and suitability issues.

The consultation is available here.

Final approval of the changes should go to the SRA Board next spring, with changes to the Handbook made in May or June. This will enable them to be implemented in time for the 2014 academic year.
