Property Search Group announces spectacles appeal for World Sight Day

In Property Search Group’s 20th year, 3 of its South West offices have joined forces to raise money for international charity Vision Aid Overseas.

In celebration of World Sight Day, PSG’s teams based in Swindon, Somerset and Plymouth are planning to visit law firms across the region to collect old spectacles for recycling. Vision Aid takes the glasses and recycles them, with the income generated from the campaign used to help train eye care workers in Ghana, Ethiopia and Zambia and provide eye care services and life changing glasses to some of Africa’s poorest areas.

Elaine Connor at PSG says:

“Following on from the successful Southernhay Life initiative, which raised over £2,500 for Devon Community Foundation, we recently started working with Vision Aid Overseas. We were compelled to help after hearing that just £5 provides a person in Africa with an eye test and a pair of glasses. Such a small amount to most people, but with a life changing impact.”

World Sight Day is the only international day of awareness and fundraising. Held on the 12th October, the aim of WSD is to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment and to raise funds to help bring affordable eye care services to some of the poorest communities in the world.

Sarah Namusobya, Senior Fundraising Officer at Vision Aid Overseas, comments:

“Vision Aid Overseas is really pleased and grateful to be PSG’s chosen charity of the year, especially in its 20th Anniversary year. As Elaine mentioned, it costs as little as £5 to provide a child or an adult in Africa access to an eye test and a pair of prescription glasses which can completely transform their lives. So please donate if you can and help restore sight to some of Africa’s poorest and most marginalised communities.

The glasses donated to VAO are hand sorted in its warehouse and then some specs are recycled for precious metals, whilst others are cleaned and sold on the charity’s EBay shop or to specialist dealers.

“It’s really easy to get involved in the World Sight Day campaign,” explains Elaine

“All you need to do is contact us, to confirm you would like to take part, and then put a call out to your team to request they bring disused glasses to work by 8th October.  We will organise a convenient time to visit your office and collect your specs. It’s that simple and, In addition to raising money, we will also be having lots of fun on the day, with a few surprises up our sleeves!”

Elaine continues: “What sets us apart from our competitors is the priority we place on building local relationships and taking the time to understand and support the communities in which we live and work. Bringing people together for the Vision Aid Overseas campaign is a perfect example of this ethos.”
