New SDLT guidance notes come into effect today

From today (2nd July 2012), a new version of the Land Transaction Return guidance notes (SDLT6) will come into effect.
The new guidance notes have been streamlined and will only be available online.  It can be accessed on the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) website in PDF format.
The guidance notes will be maintained and updated through regular reviews.  HMRC will create additional pages in the SDLT manual for specific questions will were covered in the old guidance but which are not included in the new electronic version.  These pages will link to guidance and examples and is also available now.
The Law Society has suggested that as the new SDLT6 is shorter than before, it may be less comprehensive.  It suggests that solicitors may wish to retain the paper copies of the old guidance for reference, but should use the new online SDLT6 in the first instance.
Information on the HMRC website can be found here.
