New statistics have indicated that 40,000 new homes were registered to be built in the UK during the second quarter of 2017.
According to NHBC, the number of homes registered by developers reached 40,343 over the three months to June, a slight drop of 1% compared to the same period last year.
In the private sector, there was an annual fall of 7%, with the number of new homes registered down to 29,123. In contrast, the affordable sector saw an increase, up by 19% to 11,220 compared to 2016.
The ongoing rise in this sector has largely been linked to the growth in private sector joint ventures as well as the rise in the number of Housing Association developments. These were primarily for private sale, market rent as well as shared ownership.
The most notable growth occurred in Wales and the West Midlands, with annual increases of 56% and 33% respectively.
Commenting on the figures was Neil Jefferson. The Business Development Director at NHBC highlighted that the data demonstrated stability, as well as a healthy level of demand.
“New home registrations have remained stable in the second quarter of this year, with some areas of the UK seeing significant increases in registration volumes.
“With demand for housing as strong as ever, the growth seen in the affordable sector is particularly encouraging.”
