The UK Government have this evening provided further clarity on their intentions to kick-start the housing market.
The daily briefing was this evening conducted by Housing Minster Robert Jenrick who provided an update on the government’s position regarding re-opening residential sales and lettings, and construction.
The update comes following the steady stream of guidance published since Sunday’s announcement that the UK was moving into a new phase of dealing with Coronavirus.
Throughout today’s briefing Jenrick reiterated the government’s stance that the move to phases 2 and 3 of the transition period was dependent on the continued fall in the R; the rate at which the virus reproduces.
Acknowledging that it is “essential we cautiously open up parts of our economy where its safe to do so” Jenrick was keen to get the 450,000 buyers who put their home moves on hold, moving.
Following on from the government guidance released today Jenrick confirmed
- Estate and Lettings Agent offices can open from today
- Viewing, both virtual and remote can take place
- Show homes can re-open
- Removal companies and other essential parts of the home moving process can be restarted with immediate effect
with the caveat that all parties must observe the strict hygiene measures and social distancing guidelines.
Get Britain Building
Jenrick also renewed the government’s pledge to Get Britain Building again with the announcement construction businesses should return to work.
To encourage construction and expand capacity, construction companies can apply to extend their working hours up to 9pm Monday to Saturday in residential areas, and later in non-residential areas.
In an acknowledgement the work done by key workers throughout the crisis, Jenrick announced that the First Homes Programme will offer 30% discount on new homes for key workers and local first time buyers.
