HMLR warn about fraud risk

HM Land Registry has recently issued a reminder on key fraud advice.

Corresponding with the start of Scams Awareness Month, HMLR has highlighted the need for customers to be alert to any suspicion they may feel about a property transaction.

They have provided advice for firms, listing the ways they recommend clients will be best protected.

This includes encouraging clients to:

  • Read their guide on property fraud
  • Sign up to the Property Alert service
  • Watch their video of property fraud

Whilst acknowledging that many firms have already provided property fraud advice on their website, they also invite firms to order additional advisory leaflets for free.

Drawing attention to the relevance of the warning, the Land Registry state that they have prevented the registration of 254 fraudulent applications since 2009, indicating that the risk is ongoing.

They state that although no system can be totally fraud proof, a joint initiative can communicate the risk and in turn, reduce it.

HMLR urge firms to report any suspicious property transactions as soon as possible by calling their fraud line on 03000067030 or by emailing reportafraud@landregistry.gov.uk.

Additional leaflets can be ordered by emailing pfleaflets@landregistry.gov.uk, specifying the number of leaflets along with the shipping address or DX number.
