HMLR offering free post completion training to ‘avoid easy errors’

HM Land Registry (HMLR) is offering a series of interactive workshops designed for post-completion specialists to support efforts to reduce errors and save time and money. 

The webinars explore some of the most common issues that conveyancers face, HMLR says, and provide a clear understanding of what common requisitions the agency receives and how to prevent them

HMLR estimates avoidable requisitions could be costing conveyancers as much as £19 million annually in administrative time. Some of the main reasons for requisitions include variations in names, missing information, errors in plans and descriptions, identity errors, missing evidence, ownership type, dates and amounts, witness details, death of a proprietor and deed in parts.

In May 2025, HMLR began publishing data relating to the volume of requisitions it received, establishing an avoidable requisition rate statistic by comparing the number of submissions with the number of requisitions; the higher the number of requisition, the higher the avoidable requisition rate.

The most recently published data showed “encouraging progress”, HMLR said, with under a third (29%) of professional customers showing a reduction in their avoidable requisition rates. More than half (57%) of firms had rates below 5%, a fifth of firms (20%) achieved rates under 1% (up from 17% last year in 2024) and 18% had no avoidable requisitions at all.

Of the 4610 firms on the list, 3274 (71%) recorded 10 or fewer fully avoidable requisitions

Two upcoming workshops will cover ‘complete and correct applications’ and ‘new build applications’, with the latter focusing on issues common to new build work including restrictions, plans issues, discounts and incentives.

All sessions include a live Q&A session with HM Land Registry experts, who can answer any questions.
