DLUHC figures demonstrate the highest recorded figures for new build homes during second quarter of 2022
Official government figures show that record numbers of new housing developments were started during the second quarter of 2022.
The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) statistics show that between 1st April and 20th June 2022, the number of dwellings where building work has begun was 51,730, a 21% increase on the previous quarter and 15% higher compared to the same quarter in 2021.
The figures are the largest on record, with home building data stretching back to 2002.
The number of completions has also risen by 3% on the previous quarter to 44,940 dwellings. This is a 6% increase compared to last year’s second quarter.
Figure one below shows a stark increase in the number of starts and completions with starts reaching record highs, even when compared to before the economic collapse in 2008.
Estimates for 2022 shows 180,820 new builds, based on new build starts up to 30th June. This would represent a 5% increase on 2021.
However, new build completions are estimated to reach 173,530 which would be a 5% decrease on the previous year.
In addition to this, the figures also show that 280,000 homes were granted planning permission up to the 30th of June 20200, which was a 16% decrease on he same period in 2021.
Despite record numbers, the figures released by the DLUHC fall short of the central governments ambition of increasing housing supply to 300,000 homes per year by the mid-2020s.
