Figures show ‘substantial increase’ in homes hitting market since schools returned

Research shows a “substantial increase” in homes hitting the market across England since pupils returned to school in September, with more than 50,000 listed.

Figures released by estate agency Yopa found that on 31 August, 331,255 homes had been put on the market across England. Just two weeks later, on 14 September, an additional 54,310 had been listed.

This equated to a 16% increase in the level of homes available for sale across England since school holidays concluded.

The research also suggests that properties listed since the start of September now account for around one in every seven homes currently on the market.

Data on house listings was sourced by Yopa from online property portal Zoopla.

Among the counties most affected by the back to school rush include Rutland in the East Midlands, which saw for-sale stock climb by 35%. Listings in the Isle of Wight increased by 34% after the end of August, and Worcestershire, Devon and Greater London all saw increases of 20% after schools returned.

Verona Frankish, CEO of Yopa, said: “The summer holidays traditionally bring a quieter period for the property market, with many sellers choosing to hold off while schools are out and families are focused on getting away.

“But once September arrives, we tend to see the market spring back into action and this year has been no different, with more than 54,000 additional homes hitting the market in just two weeks.

“That’s a substantial increase in such a short period of time and should bring greater choice for buyers who may have also put their plans on hold over the summer months.”
