Environment Agency announces shale gas consultation

The Environment Agency has announced a second consultation has begun into shale gas exploration at three sites in Lancashire.

They propose that strict conditions are set out in the permits to ensure local communities and the environment is protected.

Bowland Resources Ltd, a subsidiary of Cuadrilla, has applied for permits to manage waste flowback water from hydraulic fracturing at Singleton, Becconsall and Westby.

The permits also cover drill cuttings, waste gas and any naturally-occurring radioactive substances in waste water.

People now have the chance to comment on the proposals by emailing [email protected] or writing to EP team, Quadrant 2, 99 Parkway Avenue, Sheffield, S9 4WF.

The consultation runs until 13 February 2013. Responses will be fed into the Environment Agency’s on-going assessment before a final decision to grant or deny the permits is made.
