Diary Of A Highstreet Conveyancer – Wednesday April 29

Wednesday

I was hopeful that a sale of an empty property I had would complete on Friday. One completion was better than none, and as the filing cabinet empties of those clients who could move while we are in this phase of lockdown, it seems that the prospect of making some money is slowing down. And we have to remember that although we are helping people achieve the dream of their new home, we are also running a business – and financially, times are hard. We all know how much our insurance costs and the rent of our premises and all the additional costs of running a business – it is nice to be a boss but expensive when things like this happen.

I was surprised to discover that there is a Bank Holiday at the end of next week. In usual times, this would have been a focus for many people to move, but where I have the people who should have moved around Easter time still waiting to see when they can move, I only have two clients who are keen to move before the Bank Holiday. I think that the Bank Holiday being on a Friday had thrown me as well. It was not on my horizon, whereas usually us conveyancers are focussed on public holidays as there is always a spike of house moves. There is an extra day of work so let’s use it wisely and move house. But not this year, and it is as if having a day off for the Bank Holiday is like any other day – perhaps every day is like a Bank Holiday but without the prospect of ice cream in the park. And without the prospect of a much wanted house move……

Never lose hope. Storms make people stronger and never last forever.
