Councils' plan half a million new homes

A plan to provide half a million new and affordable homes for families has been put forward by a group of by over 370 local councils.

The Local Government Association is representing the councils in England and Wales and wants to implement a set of new measures to help the large numbers of people unable to get their foot on the property ladder have access to affordable housing.

With house prices rising faster than average earnings and 1.7 million households on waiting lists for affordable homes across England, only half of the 221,000 homes needed every year are being built, which would cause a total home shortage of over a million in one decade.

Some of the LGA’s key proposals include government incentive schemes to encourage private developers to speed up housing delivery; the creation of council-led local land trusts; the complete scrapping of the housing borrowing cap and an overhaul of the government’s Right to Buy scheme.

The LGA has launched a campaign called "Investing in our nation’s future: the first 100 days of the next government", a proposal of how the next government elected in 2015 should use their first 100 days in power and includes recommendations o changes to public services and local government so a range of outcomes and improvements can be achieved, including building 500,000 new homes.
