Academics and charities will today (8/1/18) be questioned on whether local authorities have sufficient powers to tackle ‘rogue landlords’.
In a Parliamentary Session due to take place this afternoon, the Communities and Local Government Committee will also begin its pre-legislative scrutiny of the proposed lettings fee ban which would apply to tenants.
The former half of the session will focus on the Private Rented Sector inquiry, which looks at the role of councils in the regulation and provision of private rented accommodation. Questions on the inquiry will be posed to a panel including academics and representatives from various charities, and are expected to focus on landlord licensing, incentives for best practice and complaints mechanisms.
During the latter half of the session, the draft Tenant Fees Bill will be considered, looking at the potential impact on tenants, landlords, and lettings agents as well as methods of enforcement.
