On Tuesday we reported that a Law Society SGM had passed a vote of no confidence in the Law Society.
The SGM was triggered by 118 criminal legal aid practitioners who were angered by the Society’s engagement strategy with the Ministry of Justice and argued that the Society had no mandate for the actions it took.
Jonathan Smithers, Law Society deputy vice-president has commented on what the meeting means for the future of the Conveyancing Portal.
He said: “While the Society confirmed that a mandate had been granted under our constitution, in response to the views of members at the SGM we are taking a hard look at how the Society engages and communicates with its members.
“We cannot change our constitution – and therefore decision-making basis – in a hurried fashion. You can read our President’s reaction to the SGM here.
“In developing the Conveyancing Portal, we have and continue to extensively engage with practitioners.
“We have received a great level of support from the various governance bodies, practitioners and the wider conveyancing industry. This project is underway and we do not anticipate that it will be affected in any way by the SGM.”
