Calling all conveyancers: Do conveyancers have a duty to advise on climate change risks?

Where does the responsibility for climate change risks fall when it comes to moving home?

This is the question posed by conveyancing search body the Conveyancing Information Executive (CIE) at their inaugural conference in October.

Alongside Today’s Conveyancer, the CIE are asking conveyancers to share their thoughts on the role and responsibilities of all those involved in the home moving process when it comes to climate change.

We are asking for two minutes of your time to complete a short survey below and be part of the most topical conversation in the property industry right now.

The response will be published in Today’s Conveyancer in the coming weeks.

The CIE Conference will address the current landscape when it comes to climate change; who is driving wider consideration, why is climate change an issue for the UK housing stock now, and where does responsibility fall for “regulating” and verifying climate change data for housing?

On the conference, the CIE have said:

“Climate change risk management is becoming an increasingly topical consideration for the property industry and its practitioners.

The Conveyancing Information Executive represents a membership of the largest data, search and service providers in the conveyancing market, and has convened a conference to assist all market stakeholders in approaching this burgeoning issue.

The conference on 6th October features speakers from Landmark, Groundsure, The Chancery Lane Project, GeoPlace, Land Registry, Geodesys, Anglian Water, Sort Refer, as well as practicing solicitors.”

Set up in 2020 to “provide (a) rigorous and transparent approach to property search governance standards, with data integrity, accuracy and transparency,” the Conveyancing Information Executive now consists of 17 organisations who provide data and insight to the housing market.

  1. Climate control has nothing to do with a conveyancing matter
I don’t accept same anywhere and we need to keep politics out of these matters

  2. To suggest conveyancers ought ever have a duty to advise on climate change is utterly woke and preposterous. Next we’ll hear calls for conveyancers to be responsible for assessing a client’s financial prospects and wage earning capacity to determine risk of being able to repay a mortgage.
