Tuesday In the ‘old days’, there were days when you really wished you hadn’t bothered; you felt unappreciated, and were ready to throw in the towel. I have not had many of those days in the last eight weeks and although life is hard , I thought that perhaps there had been some reassessing of the important things in life, and a general hope that everyone would be kinder and more understanding to each other.
Well I can tell you that based on the experience of today, I don’t think that is true for all.
Another solicitor, for whom I did have respect, was very nasty to me today. I think that I became a conveyancing solicitor because I am not good at confrontation. I often joke that if I liked to argue, I would have become a litigator. The good thing about conveyancing is that everyone does want the same outcome – buyer buying, seller selling – and even though it can be fraught on the way to completion, there is a resolution and an ending which (generally) suits all involved. People are happy to move; sellers may be irritated if they have had to reduce the price if the house ; buyers may be irritated if the washing machine was taken, but generally, people are happy. And therefore when I come across a conveyancer who appears argumentative and confrontational, I am firstly surprised, and secondly genuinely upset by it. I stood my ground and defended my client’s position but it is upsetting and can ruin the day . And then when I thought about it, I decided that perhaps the conveyancer was having a bad day and I just happened to be his target at that moment; worries about staff, money and running a business do take their toil.
But please, be kind to each other – we are all going through something on a path which we have not had to navigate before and there are weeds and thorns ahead.
